Located in the heart of historic Downtown Frederick, Maryland, The Muse was opened in 2003 with a mission to create an environment that stimulates creative inspiration and supports the community and the handmade revolution. Over the two decades the shop has existed it has evolved, and in 2026 owner Sumner Crenshaw decided it was time to reinvent! When considering what the next chapter should look like, Sumner decided to create a space for "oddballs like me". People whose interests may be a little niche and who don't always see themselves represented in other stores. Sumner said "I'm not an oddball, I'm the belle of the ball! I'm an Odd Belle!" And thus, OddBelle was born. The goal was to create a space with diverse offerings, so that whether you're shopping for new folklore-inspired artwork, an amulet invoking the power of a goddess, or just a fun gift for your Grandma, Oddbelle has got something for you. We have also developed into a small-scale screen printing operation, creating our own line of hand-drawn, hand-printed apparel!
Giving back to our community is a top priority for us. For years, the shop collaborated with artist Courtney Prahl to start Lend a Hand, an annual community-wide charity art auction that has raised thousands each year for various local charity organizations. In addition, Oddbelle is passionate about giving back to the global community and has held fundraisers to support various causes, including supporting women in Afghanistan and combating vaccine inequality. Most recently, we created and sold "Free Palestine" tees to raise money for American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA). Non-profits we have supported include The Frederick Center, Streamlink Education, City Youth Matrix, Abortion Fund Maryland, Women for Women Afghanistan and The UN Vaccine Fund.
About Our Owner
Sumner Crenshaw (she/her) is an artist and small business owner located in Frederick, MD. Her art pays particular attention to themes of feminism, empowerment, mythology, and mental health awareness.
Sumner received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Johnson State College and earned her Master of Fine Arts degree with a focus on oil painting from Academy of Art University. She has been working professionally as an artist since 2005, and has shown in galleries across the US. Her work is housed in both national and international collections.
Originally hailing from Northern Vermont, Sumner relocated to Frederick, MD in 2010. She currently resides in historic downtown Frederick, MD where she runs her own business, OddBelle. When she's not at her shop or in her studio creating, Sumner can be found researching some obscure mythological figure, playing Florence + The Machine on repeat, or spoiling her two dachshunds, Hiccup and Pudding.
